How to Pack for a Trip
Never try to underestimate the importance of proper packing. The mood or the tone of the trip is set right from the time
you start packing and depends on the way you pack. Given below are a few tips if you want to pack like an expert.
- Make a list of all the items you plan to take on your trip, both that you intend to pack and what you do not intend to.
- Now try to find the items, which if removed, will lighten your load. Do you really need three pairs of shoes during your trip?
- Remember to buy travel-size containers for your toiletries. You have the option of dropping into a local shop and restocking your supply, unless you are in a remote location.
- Use ‘roll’ technique to pack your clothing. Make a flattened layer of two or three items. Roll them up to save space and avoid wrinkles. To avoid the least of wrinkles, you can also use a sheet heavy tissue between items of clothing before you roll them up.
- Carry reusable compression bags to pack sweaters and underwear. These bags save space and lock in odors as well.
6. Keep your toiletry containers in airtight plastic bags. If you got some breakable items, you can cushion them by wrapping your socks and pajamas around.

For example, I have power tips for: my cellphone, my wife's cellphone, my sony clie, my mp3 player, my laptop computer, and my portable GPS unit. Instead of bringing the charger for each of these, I just bring the igo bundle, which is pretty compact and easy to pack in my laptop case or suitcase.
My other tips would be to try and buy clothes in fabrics that don't wrinkle and in colours that don't show the dirt and/or mix and match well with the other things you have packed. Multipurpose items also good (eg, I have some shoes which are kind of like a cross between sports shoes and sandals - great for hiking in the tropics or going to the beach).
Big debate on another travelling website recently about whether women travellers are frivolous if they take things like electric hair straighteners with them. I was amazed at how many women regard this as an essential item. If travelling for a long period of time, i would probably either get my hair cut really short or else grow it long enough to braid so it wouldn't need constant straightening.
